With a median age of 19 years, the majority of Tanzanians need or will need sexual and reproductive health services now or in the near future more than ever before. The median age at first sexual intercourse is 17.4 years for women and 18.5 years for men. Among Tanzanian young people aged 15–24, 60% lack comprehensive prevention knowledge about the most lethal sexually transmitted diseases. Only 15-25% of primary and secondary schools provide sexuality education, and only 30% of health facilities offer youth-friendly services. Limited information on sexual and reproductive health, poor access to sexual and reproductive health services, lack of privacy and confidentiality, and provider bias are significant barriers for young people seeking sexual reproductive health services.
A better future depends on the decisions we make today. To secure a better future, Tanzanian young people need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Therefore, the Tanzania Sexual and Reproductive Health Forum aims to make Tanzania a place where every youth is engaged, empowered, and well-informed about their sexual and reproductive health needs.
To establish and strengthen community and national mechanisms to change social and gender norms that hinder the agency and autonomy of youths, and limit access to rights-based family planning and sexual and reproductive health information and services for young people in Tanzania.
